The Bittersweet Symphony of Change: Letting Go to Grow

There's a moment in every hairdresser's life when the buzz of the salon fades, and we're left alone with our thoughts. For me, that moment stretched into months, then years. Eight years into owning my salon, I found myself standing at a crossroads, heart heavy with indecision.

## When Success Feels Like a Cage From the outside,

I had it all. A thriving salon, a team that felt like family, and clients who trusted me with not just their hair, but their stories. Yet, something was missing. Each snip of the scissors, once a source of joy, began to feel mechanical. The weight of responsibility, once empowering, now felt suffocating.

I grappled with a feeling I couldn't shake – that this path, despite all its success, wasn't right for me anymore. The realisation was as terrifying as it was liberating.

## The Hardest Decision Deciding to sell my salon was like choosing to amputate a part of myself. It was my creation, my legacy. Every corner held a memory, every mirror reflected years of growth and laughter. How could I let it go?

The voice of doubt was relentless. "You're giving up," it whispered. "This is failure." I spent sleepless nights battling these thoughts, torn between the comfort of what I knew and the call of the unknown.

## Redefining Success It took time, but slowly, I began to see things differently. Success isn't a destination; it's a journey. And sometimes, that journey takes unexpected turns. Selling the salon wasn't admitting defeat – it was choosing to write a new chapter.

I realised that it's okay to outgrow your dreams. It's okay to choose a different path, even when the one you're on seems perfect to everyone else. True failure isn't changing direction; it's staying somewhere that no longer serves your soul.

## Finding Joy in Unexpected Places as I worked through this transition, I discovered pockets of joy in unexpected places. I've always loved stories, and I found myself drawn to creating them in a new way. I wrote and published a children's book, pouring my creativity into pages meant to inspire young minds. The process was healing, a reminder that there are so many ways to touch lives beyond the salon chair.

With another book on the way this year, I've found a new rhythm to my days. It's different, sometimes scary, but undeniably right. This journey has taught me that purpose isn't always loud and obvious. Sometimes it's a quiet calling, a gentle tug towards something that makes your heart sing.

## Stepping Back to Move Forward Now, as I return to renting a chair, I carry with me the lessons of ownership, the bittersweetness of letting go, and the excitement of new beginnings. I'm not just a hairdresser anymore – I'm a storyteller, in more ways than one.

To my fellow stylists who might be feeling that same restlessness, that same yearning for something more: it's okay. It's okay to question, to explore, to redefine what success means to you. Your journey is uniquely yours, and there's no shame in changing course.

## The Symphony Continues Life, I've learned, is like a symphony. Sometimes we need to change instruments to play our part fully. Selling my salon wasn't the end of my song – it was simply a key change, a shift in melody that allows me to express myself more truly.

As I stand here, looking back at the path that led me here and forward to the unknown, I'm filled with gratitude. Gratitude for the courage to listen to my heart, for the support of those who understood, and for the endless possibilities that lie ahead.

Remember, your worth isn't tied to a single role or achievement. It's in the love you put into everything you do, the lives you touch, and the joy you find along the way. Here's to new beginnings, to finding purpose in unexpected places, and to the beautiful, messy, wonderful journey of growth.
